Score: 4/5 stars
It’s a film that was anticipated and talked about for months. Often raunchy, scandalous and very controversial, is “Fifty Shades of Grey” really all it’s hyped up to be? In many ways, yes.
Given it’s cult-like following, it’s safe to say there was hardly any way this movie could flop. However, “Fifty Shades” will have you sitting on the edge of your seat, even if you aren’t already a fan of the novel. This film has romance, sex and suspense that will leave you wanting more.
Before heading into the theater, be forewarned— this movie has an R rating for a reason. Even fans who read the book and knew what to expect might be shocked at how much this film shows on screen. If you aren’t ready to see breasts, toes and everything in between, then perhaps you should head somewhere else for your movie night.
This film follows the relationship between Anastasia Steele, an innocent college student who’s just about to graduate, and Christian Grey, a successful, intimidating man who is the CEO of his own company. From the beginning of the movie, it’s clear there’s an attraction. Christian provides Anastasia with the excitement she’s been looking for in her life and it seems she draws out a softer side of himself.
The rest of the film depicts the blossoming of their relationship, Anastasia’s introduction to Christian’s secret sexual fantasies and her attempts to break down his walls and show him love. The scenes are often racy and intense, but sometimes endearing.
Movie-goers will be pleasantly surprised to know the movie isn’t all about brooding, cliched moments and sappy love declarations. There are many scenes that will have fans laughing at the sweet interactions between the unusual couple. Their conflict of interest provides for some very comical moments.
But don’t be fooled, the movie definitely delivers on the sexy front. Christian Grey is a fan of dominance and submissive activities. Anastasia is very inexperienced at the beginning of the film and quite vulnerable when Christian comes to her and asks her to be his sexual partner. He has many rules and even an official contract he asks her to sign before they begin their relationship. As the movie continues, however, it becomes clear he and Anastasia are connecting in a way unfamiliar to him.
For those who have read the book, it’s easy to be critical of the writing style. It is often redundant and not incredibly well written. The movie, on the other hand, takes all of the best moments of the book and turns it into a well composed, beautiful film. Despite the sexual overtone of the film, it is tasteful.
“Fifty Shades of Grey” set multiple records in box office sales when it came out this past weekend. Given its huge fanbase, all of that can’t be pinned on the incredible cinematic experience, but it is worth a watch if you’re looking to be a little turned on, uncomfortable or intrigued. Also, for those that haven’t read the book, the ending will certainly have you craving more.
