Louisiana now finds herself facing two runoffs: the governor’s election and the lieutenant governor’s election.
U.S. Senator David Vitter and Rep. John Bel Edwards are continuing the race for governor, while Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden and former Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser are competing for lieutenant governor.
As far as the governor’s runoff, some students are disappointed by the candidates.
“I’m not the biggest Vitter fan,” said Calli Farrell, LSU sophomore. “So I’m going to be voting for John Bel Edwards.”
Other students support Vitter, saying his experience will help lead him to victory.
“Vitter will win,” said Greg Beaumont, LSU freshman. “And it’s not because he’s better, which is a relative term. It’s because he knows what he’s doing.”
However, LSU Professor Bob Mann believes there is still a chance for Edwards. In a recent blog post regarding the governor’s runoff, Mann says, “The election results don’t lie and they are unambiguous and clear: John Bel Edwards can beat David Vitter to become Louisiana’s next governor.”
Some students are just as excited about the lieutenant governor’s runoff as well.
“I’m so excited,” Farrell said. “I am from Gretna right by Belle Chase, and Billy Nungesser is from Belle Chase. He has done a lot for our local community, and I was so afraid he wasn’t going to make it into the runoff. I’m so proud of him.”
Farrell hopes the final pair will be John Bel Edwards and Billy Nungesser, but she has a feeling Vitter’s popularity will win him the position as governor.
“It’s probably going to be Vitter and Billy, but I’m hoping for Edwards and Billy.”
Both runoff elections will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21.
