Singer Iman Omari soars in his latest release of his R&B, tribal and experimental confection entitled “High Loops and Higher Loops,” a follow-up to 2014’s “High Loops.”
A formidable singer and producer, Omari has produced records for Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller and OverDoz, so it’s no secret this record is remnant of late-’90s neo-soul and is better suited for relaxing than twerking.
Omari showcases his production skills as opposed to his equally formidable vocal chops and writing abilities, which he commonly puts in the forefront.
Usually laced in heavy electro funk keyboard playing and sensual synths, the “High Loops and Higher Loops” tracklist features original songs from his 2014 release as well new releases. This record sticks more toward The Boondocks signature intro and outro than a Prince or Stevie Wonder record.
“Addicted” is the EP’s opening track. True to Iman Omari nature, the title song is a psychodelic twist of chimes and bass cruising under studio a capella vocals of Ryan Leslie’s 2008 R&B hit “Addiction” featuring Cassie and rapper Fabolous.
“L.A. Vibe” doesn’t shy away from the EP’s smooth sound. A whimsical track crafted with a flute and the normal Omari base would be perfect for cruising. This track is topped with strings toward the end, similar to the vibe someone would get in a 1950s produced film.
“Nas_Riri Flip” is, as you guessed it, a Nas and Rihanna assisted song using studio a capella versions of their hits “Got Yourself a Gun” and “Diamonds”. A quirky pair of songs, the two tunes seem to work harmoniously on this tribal African drum inspired instrumental with Nas poetically rapping and Rihanna lullabying the latter half of the song.
A jewel in it’s own right, “Higher Loops” lives up to expectations of Omari’s experimental music. A jewel in it’s own right, “Higher Loops” lives up to expectations of Omari’s experimental music.
Though a beautifully crafted EP and a seemingly spontaneous release for anticipating fans, the equally talented vocalist should feature more vocal work on his next release. This EP will be avaialable Sept. 18.
