Similar proposals have failed in recent years to gain traction with the Legislature. But the House transportation committee voted 9-7 Monday to advance the bill to the full House for another debate.
Baton Rouge Rep. Regina Barrow says she’s proposed the bill as a safety measure. She says drivers should keep both hands on the wheel.
Shreveport Rep. Barbara Norton says cell phones aren’t any more dangerous than things like drinking coffee while driving, eating while driving or reading the newspaper while driving.
Louisiana currently has a ban on texting while driving and a prohibition on younger drivers using cell phones.
