(AP) — The father of a 4-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself to death has been arrested. Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Don Kelly says 26-year-old Shawn Dean was booked with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the death of his son, Shawn Dean Jr., earlier Wednesday.
Investigators believe Dean left a gun in the home that the little boy could access, and he accidentally shot himself in the head with it. Kelly says the victim was apparently home with his sleeping mother and another child when the shooting happened just before 11 a.m.
Kelly says Dean, who had gone on an errand, returned home and allegedly hid the gun before police arrived. The gun was later found in a field nearby.
