The musical duo of Flosstradamus have had a huge impact on the trap genre’s recent rise in popularity. Trap music is electronic music with influences in southern hip-hop and hardstyle, often utilizing short audio samples and electronic beats that have heavy bass lines to create music meant to be danced to. As the genre has been gaining a following, Flosstradamus tunes have been circulating through dance floors and mixes.<</p>
For three weeks, EPs were released every Thursday. XO shines in exemplifying the bouncy rhythmic nature of what trap can be. The three installments are fairly similar and flow together exemplify how much fun trap music can be. “Twark” and “Deaf” use only single word samples, which dance left and right through giant bouncing synth bass to create anthems . Other tracks like “T2” feature a more poppy sound, using sounds that sustain through the song and dotted with percussion. “Drak Knight” is more reminiscent of early American dubstep with a longer vocal sample that builds into a bass drop to offer interesting results when mixed with other tracks. While often minimalistic in nature, contrast with busier tracks like “Xternal L1f3” help to create a spectrum of sounds that help round out the EPs with some variety.
The first track off XO, “Twark” was my personal favorite of the new trap offerings. To really experience Flosstradamus, you need to see them live. But barring that, a set out powerful speakers with some bass will do. With a live show so rowdy they have been banned from playing shows in some areas, they are quite the act in person. For my bass heads in the dirty dirty, they will be playing at Ampersand in New Orleans come December 29th, and I would highly recommend checking them out. Until then, go get the EPs for free from the group’s website and wobble like a top on its last few spins.
