Figure has been a musical force present in pushing boundaries and limiters with his hard style of drumstep. The release of his new album, Monsters Volume 3, continues in his tradition of head-banging bass that emphasizes the metal influences of his style of music. As a DJ that started with hip-hop mixed on vinyl, his ability to seamlessly bring together drastically different types of styles and audio samples shines through on this studio release. Eerie piano lines and old-school horror movie samples come together to create the perfect Halloween album just in time to don those sexy zombie outfits and rage like an axe murderer.
The collaborative tracks and remixes on the album help to round out the stylistic offerings and create versions of Figures tunes that will help anyone to find the one that’s just right for them. Work with the likes of J. Rabbit, Messinian, Dr. Ozi, and make for tunes that go in many different directions. “Creepin ft. Proe” shows off the hip-hop influences of Figure, bouncing between creepy vocals over minimal drum patterns and hard hitting breakdowns. “Jack The Ripper” draws on the metal nature of Figure’s music by including an electronic guitar breakdown that flows effortlessly back and forth between musical genres. “No Turning Back,” brings the sound of a grand piano to make for the feel of a funeral march attacked by zombies. The diversity achieved throughout the Album which generally could be described as drumstep expertly demonstrate the potential for electronic music’s fusion with a great number of other sounds.
The whole album can be downloaded on iTunes and Beatport, or streamed over on Figure’s Soundcloud. As with most bass music, the best way to experience Figure is to see him live. Come check him out tonight, the 19th, in Baton Rouge at the Varsity Theater, or catch him elsewhere as he makes his way around the US. We’ll be featuring a tech demo with the man himself, which should be available shortly after his show tonight. If you’d like to know a little more about the producer, he did an excellent interview with Beatport explaining a lot of his influences. Stay wild my friends!
