COLLEGE STATION, Tx.– Slowly but surely, freshman running back Jeremy Hill is making himself a household name.
A week removed from a 50-yard touchdown run that put South Carolina away, the Baton Rouge native scampered 47 yards to paydirt Saturday, giving the No. 6 Tigers (7-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) a comfortable 24-12 cushion that later resulted in a 24-19 win.
Playing in Kyle Field for the first time since 1995, the Tigers took advantage of five Texas A&M (5-2, 2-2 SEC) turnovers and used the bruising duo of Hill and junior Michael Ford to run roughshod over the Aggie defense.
After a quick first quarter that saw the Tigers get outgained 180-45 and fall behind in a 12-0 hole, LSU fired back with two consecutive touchdowns as a result of Aggie turnovers.
Going back to the ground and pound running game, the Tigers took control of the line of scrimmage in the second half to the tune of 138 second half rushing yards, while junior quarterback Zach Mettenberger chipped in 97 yards through the air to lead the Tigers to their second straight win over a top-20 team.
Redshirt freshman sensation Johnny Manziel eluded LSU defenders all day, but had three costly interceptions that resulted in 14 points, the last in the fourth quarter to set up Hill’s score.
Sacked three times on the afternoon, Manziel dazzled the maroon-clad crowd with shifty runs that had LSU’s front four on its toes throughout the game.
A late Aggie touchdown run by Ben Malena breathed new life into the Kyle Field crowd, who were only to be silenced again when sophomore Odell Beckham Jr. recovered the ensuing onside kick and preserve the victory.
