MONROE (AP) — A former teacher at a private school suspected of calling in bomb threats to three Ouachita Parish schools — including the one he worked at — faces a second bond hearing Wednesday.
State District Judge Fred Amman denied bail Monday for David Reyna, but set another hearing for 10 a.m. Wednesday. Reyna’s formal arraignment, where he will be officially charged, has been set for Nov. 12. Reyna, 30, was arrested Friday.
According to court documents, Reyna is accused of calling 911 and relaying information about a shooting and explosion.
at Ouachita Christian School, River Oaks School and St. Frederick High School shortly after 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24.
The News-Star reports (http://tnsne.ws/Ryln7B ) the three schools were evacuated but no explosives were found.
River Oaks Headmaster Tom Middleton said school was back to “business as usual” after faculty, students and parents had a weekend to digest that Reyna, the first-year Spanish teacher, was the suspect.
Middleton said he met with students and faculty during an assembly Monday morning.
“I talked to them about it,” he said. “They handled it well. I think what made the difference was how well law enforcement agencies handled everything.”
Middleton, in a statement Monday, also said the school is limited in its remarks because it’s both a personnel issue and remains under investigation.
The statement, however, said Reyna has been fired.
Middleton said a background check conducted on Reyna before he was hired showed no previous criminal arrest record.
Sheriff’s deputies said Reyna admitted he was the suspected caller. According to court documents, he also admitted to using illegal drugs, suffers from emotional issues such as depression, doesn’t sleep and is having marital troubles and difficulty with his newborn child.
The arrest affidavit indicates investigators traced business records associated with the suspect’s phone, the number of which was recorded at the time of the 911 call. Records pointed to Reyna, authorities said. Reyna told investigators he had thrown the phone in a trash bin.
