The first five months of Johnny Jones’ “dream job” have been anything but ideal.
After the abrupt resignation of his longtime assistant coach Shawn Forrest and the departure of veteran LSU basketball players Ralston Turner and Justin Hamilton, Jones learned Monday that Howard College transfer Calvin Godfrey did not meet academic requirements and was released from his letter of intent.
Godfrey, who transferred with Howard teammate Shavon Coleman, looked to be a sizable 6-foot-8-inch forward who could complement sophomore Johnny O’Bryant III and give the Tigers critical minutes in the post.
Instead, he’ll be searching for his fourth school in three years after he was dismissed from Iowa State in 2010 for marijuana possession.
After leaving the Cyclones, Godfrey went on to average 12.6 points and seven rebounds per game at Howard as he led the Hawks to a 23-8 record, shooting 62 percent from the field.
Sports Information Director Kent Lowe said Jones and his staff are working to fill Godfrey’s roster spot immediately.
“The coaching staff will be working to try to find someone to fill that spot on the roster as quickly as possible if they can,” Lowe said. “If not, these things happen sometimes in basketball, … and our staff will adapt and move forward.”
Godfrey’s dismissal leaves the Tigers with only nine scholarship players and three returning starters from last season’s squad that advanced to the NIT.
