The state government is short more than $6 million it is required to pay the New Orleans Hornets and New Orleans Saints, The Associated Press reported Monday.
The contract between the state and the two teams spells out the amounts the state must pay each franchise per year.
The AP also reported the news could become worse since state officials are also searching for alternative methods for coming up with $19.5 million for next year’s payment.
The Saints and Hornets could be allowed to leave New Orleans if the state cannot make those payments.
