Catherine Grubb’s birthday is on Thanksgiving, but she won’t let today’s class disrupt her celebrating.Grubb, chemical engineering junior, said her calculus professor is still holding class the day before Thanksgiving.”He doesn’t care if I show up, and I have a pretty good grade in the class,” Grubb said.Because today is not an official University holiday, professors aren’t given any special guidance on holding class, said University Registrar Robert Doolos.”There’s no special instruction given to professors on holding class the day before Thanksgiving,” Doolos said. “It’s always at the instructor’s discretion whether to hold class on a particular day or not.”Andy Palermo, Student Government Senator, said during the summer, the LSU Board of Supervisors approved to amend next year’s fall academic calendar.”We are still going to have a day of class on Wednesday, but classes will end at 12:30,” Palermo said. “Students having to travel home will have more time, and we still fulfill our commitment to have [so many school days].”Many professors are still holding class today despite many students having to travel home for Thanksgiving.Christopher Gregg, biology professor, said he is still holding class today.”It is the University policy and my policy that if the University is open, I will be conducting class as usual,” Gregg said. “If they miss it, they will be missing out on that material. But I understand that some students have a long drive home, especially out-of-state students.”Students are reacting differently to the University holding class today. Stone Gonzales, economics freshman, said he thinks class should be canceled.”I live in Texas — five hours away,” Gonzales said. “I wouldn’t go to class if I had it.”Thomas Plunkett, mechanical engineering sophomore, said he does not mind going to class the day before Thanksgiving.”I have friends who live way out of town and can’t make it [to class] because of it,” Plunkett said.—-Contact ben Bourgeois at [email protected]
