As the lights brightened on stage, a coffin door creaked open revealing a disturbingly decapitated girl with a gruesome slash mark across her thin throat. Then as the DJ cranked the beats, the girl’s head popped up, still attached, sporting a Halloween hairdo created by the stylists at A. Marcelite Salon. On Thursday night 600 Main hosted a Halloween hair show that showcased the stylings of three local salons, Eutopia, Forum and A. Marcelite. Each salon picked a theme to inspire the hair and costumes of their models. A. Marcelite’s theme was “Night of the Living Dead” and each model had a different color scheme evidenced in colored tulle and make-up.Eutopia Salon’s inspiration was the 12 signs of the zodiac. From Cancer’s crab claws to Capricorn’s horns, each model had an elaborate masquerade-style mask to help them manifest their sign.Forum Salon put on a theatrical show complete with choreography for their Harley-Davidson inspired hairdos. Lots of leather and intense facial expressions were worn by the motorcycle models. The finale even included a girl cracking a bullwhip along the runway.”No one’s ever seen something like that in Baton Rouge,” said Danny Breaux, University alumnus and owner of the marketing company for the club, Wildflower Productions. “The hair and theatrical aspect is unmatched on the Baton Rouge night scene.”Breaux said he took a risk with the hair show, unsure of how the public would react to such an unconventional event. But he said it was a success, with over 300 people in attendance.”I’ve never heard of a hair show so I didn’t know what to expect,” said Ross Campbell, graphic design senior. “But I like how [the salons] had a story for each show.”600 Main hosts monthly fashion shows, called Fashion on Main, which exhibits clothing by local boutiques, and Eutopia Salon does the hair and make-up for the shows.Tara Day, hair stylist at Eutopia Salon, said the hair show allows the stylists to be more creative than they are on a day-to-day basis.”Most of the time the boutiques tell you what they want and with this we get to have control,” Day said. “This is the first time we get to pick out the clothes for the models.”Day styled the Gemini and Capricorn models and said she was nervous until she saw them on stage. “It looked better on stage than I expected it would,” Day said. “I think the whole show was really good.”Eutopia’s models were supplied by a client of theirs, Angelina Harvey. She is a member of a local women’s fitness team called Katie Uter’s Louisiana Explosion. Harvey designs swimwear for the team, called Flaunt Swimwear, and she supplied pieces from her line from the hair show. She said she and the other team members are used to performing at fitness competitions, so the show was a fun way to show off their hard work.Melissa Lupo, human ecology freshmen, is a member of the fitness team. She channeled the Cancer astrological sign and wore a red swim top and glittery crab claws.”It’s fun when people get to do my hair,” she said. “Usually I just put it in a ponytail and flip across the floor.”Day said the crowd was very receptive to the salons’ creations.”The show is much better when the crowd’s receptive,” she said.
