The Lady Tigers had one final tune-up before opening their regular season against a top-25 opponent.No. 24 LSU made the best of the opportunity Tuesday with a 68-30 victory against the Houston Jaguars, a team of former college players hoping for professional opportunities.LSU showed defensive prowess and post presence but struggled to find a hot shooting hand.Junior guard Allison Hightower shot just 5-of-15 from the field Tuesday after only shooting 7-of-14 in the first exhibition game.LSU coach Van Chancellor said he can’t pinpoint why she’s struggling, especially since Hightower practices her shot often.”We’re getting her the shots,” he said. “That’s all we can do. I’m not going to bench her.”Chancellor praised the efforts of freshmen forwards Taylor Turnbow and LaSondra Barrett.”[Barrett] can shoot the ball, and Turnbow is a rebounding machine,” Chancellor said.Turnbow provided a spark off the bench with a double-double, compiling a team-high 16 points and 11 rebounds and shooting 60 percent from the field. Barrett started and scored 12 points in 17 minutes.”I think we played with a little bit more of a sense of urgency to come out from the jump ball,” she said.Barrett said she thinks LSU can “absolutely” pose a threat Sunday against No. 16 Notre Dame in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic.”Our post [players] can really shoot and get to the goal,” she said.—-Contact Amy Brittain at [email protected]
