LSU coach Fran Flory said she saw two different sides of her team this past weekend. But both sides Flory witnessed resulted in road losses to Eastern Division foes.LSU (12-9, 7-7) lost to Kentucky, 3-1, on Friday and Tennessee, 3-0, on Sunday.Flory said her team played well against the Wildcats (22-3, 13-1) but had no sense of urgency against the Volunteers (17-8, 10-4).”I’ve been really proud of this team the last few weeks because we’ve played hard, we’ve competed hard,” Flory said. “We did that Friday against Kentucky, and [Sunday] we did a very poor job of truly competing.”Despite the losses, LSU remained first in the Southeastern Conference Western Division by half a match. Ole Miss, which lost to South Carolina on Sunday, is second.Junior Brittnee Cooper and freshman Michele Williams had 13 kills each against Kentucky, combining for more than half of the team’s kills in the match.Cooper also finished with 10 kills against Tennessee.”Tennessee put three blockers in front of her, and she still hit [.421] for the day,” Flory said. “She’s more than capable of being our next All-American.”Flory said her team needs more balance after only two players, Williams and Cooper, collected double-digit kills in either match this past weekend.”One person really can’t do everything,” Flory said. “[Cooper] had great effort in both matches, but unfortunately we didn’t have enough balance, and she didn’t have enough support.”Senior outside hitter Kyna Washington racked up 15 kills on the weekend, moving her into sixth place on LSU’s career kills list with 1,389.Washington also had eight of LSU’s 23 errors against Tennessee.”As well as [Washington] handled Friday, she handled [Sunday] very poorly,” Flory said. “That wasn’t just Kyna. I don’t think our offense played well enough to beat anybody [Sunday].”The Tigers have had at least 20 errors in each of the six matches after committing only 10 in a 3-0 sweep against Auburn on Oct. 12.”The problem with our outsides, with Kyna and [sophomore outside hitter] Angela Bensend, is they really don’t get a lot of in-system balls,” Flory said. “We’re setting them when we have to set them.”Senior libero Elena Martinez had 21 and 20 digs against the Wildcats and Volunteers, extending her streak of matches with 20 or more digs to six. While Martinez moved to fifth on LSU’s career digs list with 1,263, the other facet of LSU’s defense struggled against Kentucky and Tennessee. The Tigers finished with 16 blocks on the weekend — seven against Tennessee.”We never got [Tennessee] out of rhythm offensively,” Flory said. “A great offense is going to beat a great defense every time.”LSU plays the first of three straight home games Friday against Alabama at 7 p.m.—-Contact Robert Stewart at [email protected]
