The LSU men’s cross country team finished No. 10 out of the 11 teams that competed in the Southeastern Conference Championships in Starkville, Miss., on Monday. The Lady Tigers finished last out of the 12-team women’s field. “Overall, we didn’t have a good weekday,” said LSU coach Mark Elliott. Alabama won the men’s SEC Championship with five top-10 runners and 32 points. The Tide was followed by Auburn (62), Arkansas (75) and Florida (107) — No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. The LSU’s 257 points edged only Vanderbilt’s 292 points in the 8k run. The men were led by sophomore Richard Chautin, who finished No. 38 in 25:17.26, and junior Alan Sticker, who finished No. 44 in 25:31.69.”Richard Chautin ran well, and Alan Sticker stepped up and ran well,” Elliott said.Senior leader Jacob Simmons faltered in the race, finishing in disappointment at No. 57. His time of 25:49.71 is almost a minute off his time of 24:57.36 in the 2007 SEC Championships, where he finished No. 19. Following Simmons was junior Andy Florek, who finished No. 64 in 26:02.63.”I’ll take it if Richard is my first guy but Jake and Andy are running up to their abilities,” Elliott said. “They just didn’t do that today.”Freshman Kenneth Schiffman rounded out the top-5 LSU runners, finishing at No. 80 in 26:43.83.Arkansas won the women’s SEC Championships with 46 points, and sophomore Catherine White won the individual women’s championship for Arkansas, finishing in 20:07.26 in the 6k run. Florida finished No. 2 with 53 points, followed by Tennessee at No. 3 with 107 points. The Lady Tigers’ 341 points were last at No. 12. “We ran the best we could and got 12th,” said senior Christina Porter. “Which means we have a young team, and I look to watch my girls grow with years to come.”Porter led the team with her personal record 6k time of 22:45.24, finishing at No. 51. “On the women’s side, Tina has consistently been our first,” Elliott said. “She had a great individual performance.”Freshman Laura Carleton followed Porter at No. 68 and finished with a personal record 6k time of 23:16.11. “Both of those ladies ran well,” Elliott said. “That’s what gets lost in this sometimes, because it’s a team thing. You win as a team and lose as a team.” Senior Kayann Thompson (23:53.48), freshman Jenna Hensseler (24:55.05) and freshman Amber Abbott (24:59.37) rounded out the Lady Tigers’ top 5, finishing No. 82, No. 91 and No. 92, respectively. Elliott said his teams’ performances were disappointing, and his men might have been too confident coming into the race. He feels his runners will be able to bounce back at the NCAA South Central Regional on Nov. 15. “I think they came in a little over-confident and didn’t really compete the way they were supposed to,” Elliott said. “The results show for itself.”—-Contact Jarred LeBlanc at [email protected]
