At least some LSU students will be celebrating football championships this year. The University Student Recreation Complex held its annual intramural football championships Tuesday at the UREC fields, naming champions for its sorority, co-ed and men’s leagues. In the night’s first game, the Delta Delta Delta sorority defeated Zeta Tau Alpha in 13-6 thriller that was decided with a goal-line stand.”We won my freshman year,” said biological sciences senior Michelle Waguespack. “We didn’t play last year because the timing was bad for our meetings.”Merchandising sophomore Caroline Boone caught the go-ahead touchdown on a halfback pass.”I don’t really like when I see someone out of the corner of my eye darting for me,” Boone said. “So I just kinda moved out of the way, and the ball happened to drop.”The coed game saw the Dunkin’ Donuts retain their hold over the co-ed league with a 40-0 trouncing of the BCMonsters.Madeline Casey, mass communication senior, paved the way to victory with a pick six in the game’s early moments, along with several crucial end zone receptions.Second-year vet student Dusty Andressen opened the second half with a winding touchdown run which put the lead out of reach.”It’s the start of a dynasty,” said Andrew LeGuluche, mass communication senior. “They said they’d be eating donuts so that fired us up and we were ready to roll.”In the night cap, fraternity league-champion Acaia toppled the Real Dynasty, which had conquered the UREC leagues for four-straight seasons, 26-19.”It was a beat down when we played them last year,” said Josh Thornton, petroleum engineering. “We won [the semifinal] with 28 seconds yesterday, so we had nothing to lose and they had everything to lose.”Sean Regan, political science junior, returned a kick for a touchdown, setting the pace for the upset.”That was a momentum-killing touchdown,” said Chris Baer, accounting junior. “I was really worried they would come back on us because they’ve got a great team.”Baer, whose teammates have dubbed him “Magic Hips,” escaped pressure all night long at the quarterback position and scrambled for the game-clinching touchdown with little time remaining.”The dynasty is over,” Baer said. “I knew nobody thought we would win this, but we’ll be back next year.”—-Contact David Helman at [email protected]
