Thomas Guillot, a mechanical engineering senior, participated in a 5-day Shell Business Challenge from August 10 to August 15 this year. The event hosted student engineers and aspiring Shell employees across the country and challenged them to come up with an business plan for a fictional town called Gourami. Guillot, who had two years of work experience in a chemical plant, worked with a team to solve issues of exploration and production — that is, how to find oil, where to erect drilling platforms, how to drill for it, and where to send it to be refined. At the end of the 5-day challenge, the various teams combined to create an integrated business plan to present to Shell board members; Guillot said the members accepted nearly all of their fictional budget, which translated into success for the Gourami business team.”It really taught you how to work with people and collaborate with a larger group,” Guillot said.
