BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. (AP) — Three Louisiana congressional members are asking the Air Force to make Barksdale Air Force Base the site of a new Nuclear Command.
Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu was joined by two Republicans, Sen. David Vitter and Rep. Jim McCrery, in sending a letter to Air Force Secretary Michael B. Donley asking him to consider making Barksdale the headquarters for the new command.
In the letter, the three Louisiana politicians said Barksdale is an ideal location for the command because it’s home to the 8th Air Force, which oversees nuclear operations.
Earlier this month, the Air Force announced that it would create a new command to oversee nuclear operations instead of forming a cyber command. Barksdale was the provisional headquarters of the cyber command before the idea was dropped.
