Kristen Higdon, mass communication sophomore, has perfect vision. But she wears glasses.”People say they make me look studious,” Higdon said of her square-framed black plastic glasses. “I feel like they make me look older.”After getting her eyes checked and finding out she has no need for glasses, Higdon went to a local Claire’s store and found “fake” glasses with glass frames.”I have always liked the way I look with glasses,” Higdon said.Claire Daunis, mass communication freshman, had a similar experience. But when she went to the eye doctor she found she had a slight astigmatism in one eye and was able to get prescription glasses.”My glasses make me feel like I present myself in a serious manner,” Daunis said. “I feel more professional and sophisticated.”Daunis said she thinks of her bright red Dolce and Gabbana glasses as an accessory.”I don’t have to wear mine all the time,” she said. “There is nothing wrong with people wearing fashionable glasses even if they are fake.”Daunis said when people compliment her glasses it makes her feel confident and in style.Phoebe Hathorn, international trade and finance sophomore, also wears fake glasses.Hathorn said she thinks glasses help show a person’s sense of style.”It’s kind of a different look,” Hathorn said. “I love the glasses with square frames. They look so modern.”Optometrist Joseph Atkins said when people come to him to buy fake glasses, he usually checks their eyesight anyway.”Typically we see if they need just a slight prescription,” Atkins said. “If not, we tell them to check stores like the Icing for glasses without a prescription.”Atkins said eyesight can be strained if people who do not need a prescription wear prescription glasses, but he said wearing fake glasses does not damage eyesight.Tonya Kenny, political science sophomore, wears prescription glasses and said she does not understand why people wear fake glasses.”I have glasses, and I hate wearing them,” Kenny said. “They are obnoxious when you actually need them.”Kenny said she thinks glasses are a burden because they annoy her and often fall off.”I wish I had good vision,” Kenny said.Dave Dixon, graphic design sophomore, agreed. He said he thinks people who wear fake glasses are taking their good vision for granted.”Isn’t that the point of contacts?” Dixon asked.–—Contact Blake Stephens at [email protected]
