Hurricane Gustav caused about $12 million in damages at the University but the final assessment could be as high as $18 million, according to Wednesday’s estimates by Facility Services.”This list is not inclusive of all damage,” said Kristine Calongne, University spokeswoman, in an e-mail. “But it contains the bulk of the major issues.”The estimated damage costs are only for damages to facilities. Some of the repair projects have not yet gone to bid and thus could change.Several days after Gustav’s Labor Day landfall, the University Emergency Operations Center said on-campus damage could reach $40 million.Calongne said the University could “still uncover more damage,” adding to the estimated costs.The University Student Recreational Complex sustained an estimated $2.75 million in damage. Repairs to the International Cultural Center are estimated at $1.5 million. The Chemical Engineering building will need an estimated $875,000, and the School of Music will need an estimated $850,000 in repairs.Patching and repairing campus roofs will cost an estimated $800,000. General campus grounds and all Facility Services labor for tree and debris clean up will cost an estimated $550,000.
