It took two minutes for LSU to shake off the rust Sunday against Centenary. After a two-week layoff between games caused by hurricanes Gustav and Ike, the Tigers cruised to a 7-0 victory highlighted by a three-goal flurry between the 19th and 21st minutes.”Not playing for two weeks affected the first 10 minutes,” said LSU coach Brian Lee. “But once we got our legs under us and got used to playing again, it was a good day.”Adverse effects from Hurricane Gustav forced LSU to cancel two home games last weekend, and Hurricane Ike postponed the Tigers’ match at Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday night. Just when it seemed things were returning to schedule, this Tuesday’s match against Houston was canceled as well.”It’s OK. A three-game week is not ideal, but we’re trying to play three because we’ve lost out on a few,” Lee said. “We’ll make up for it with a couple good days of training. During the season you don’t get a lot of opportunities to really train and train hard.”But if any of these outside agitations have affected the team, it didn’t show on the field Sunday. Just 19 minutes into the game, senior forward Roslyn Jones sent a pass to junior midfielder Michelle Makasini, who headed it home for a 1-0 lead.A second goal for Makasini, combined with a long-distance strike from junior forward Rachel Yepez came within 20 seconds of each other, and the Tigers had a 3-0 lead in a two minute span of time.”The first half was a little tiring, but once we got the ball moving we settled down,” Yepez said of the outburst. “It felt good though.”Things did not improve for Centenary. Freshman forward Hannah Jobe scored her first career goal just five minutes before halftime, and Jones extended the lead to 5-0 just after the break when a cross deflected off her and into the goal.Makasini sealed her second career hat-trick in the 63rd minute. Yepez won a loose ball in the corner of Centenary’s penalty box before centering it for Makasini to knock home. Junior forward Amanda Carreno tallied her first goal of the season minutes later for the final 7-0 score. The Tigers’ Tuesday game against Houston has been canceled as a result of Hurricane Ike’s affect on the Houston area. The team resumes play Friday at 7 p.m. at Oklahoma.”We’re a strong team and playing against each other isn’t going to hurt us at all,” Yepez said. “It’s just nice to get some game fitness in and play other people.”—-Contact David Helman at [email protected]
