The LSU swimming and diving teams host their annual Purple and Gold Intrasquad today at 3:00 p.m. in the LSU Natatorium. The team captains pick a purple and a gold team for the meet, and they swim against each other — with a twist. “This year we’ve got kind of a more unusual line up,” said LSU coach Adam Schmitt. “So you get to see people in events they don’t usually swim.”The lineup will include events such as the 300 individual medley and the 500 freestyle relay, both distances not swam in normal meets. “I think it is gonna make it more fun and a little more exciting for everybody,” said senior gold team co-captain Katherine Noland. “It should be fun to watch.” The meet also gives the Tigers a chance to adjust to competition.”We have a lot of freshmen who haven’t ever competed in a collegiate meet,” said senior purple team co-captain Chris White. “It is good to get them some experience before an actual meet.” White said the college meets move faster than the meets most incoming freshmen are accustomed to.Senior gold team co-captain Connor Farber said he always finds the meet fun.”You get to compete with your teammates, and you get a little bit of bragging rights,” Farber said. “It takes a little pressure off because the meet has no implications as far as the rest of the season goes.”Farber also said the meet serves as an opportunity for the swimmers to gauge their progress.Senior Monica McJunkin, co-captain of the purple team, said the intrasquad is a mental break from a regular day’s practice. “You get to see the other side of swimming that you don’t get to see,” McJunkin said. “Most of the time, it is about competition. This meet is supposed to be fun. I think that will open people up to have fun.”—-Contact Amos Morale at [email protected]
