It’s time to show some love for the ladies. The buzz around the LSU sports world has been the football team and how resilient the players have been since Hurricane Gustav.”It’s been two weeks between their first and second games of the season, and you really couldn’t tell from tonight’s performance,” said ESPN analyst Chris Fowler after LSU’s 41-3 win against North Texas. “People had questions of whether or not they would be rusty, but they looked great and start the year off 2-0.”Really … I mean, really? So what if the Tigers have slaughtered two subpar teams? Isn’t that what the beginning of September is for — to rent wins from inferior programs?Over the past few years that certainly seems to be the case.I’m a huge Tiger football fan, but I’ve got some news for all the sports junkies around campus. There’s a team that has started this season an impressive 5-0 and has climbed to its highest ranking in school history — the LSU soccer team. The Tigers came out blazing Sunday and defeated Centenary, 7-0, despite not playing for 13 consecutive days. The win propelled the Tigers to a perfect start going into their final non-conference match of the season – a 7 p.m. Friday showdown at Oklahoma. The perfect start helped the Tigers — who were not ranked in any major poll to begin the season — climb to No. 11 in this week’s Soccer America’s Top 25, which was released on Monday. The No. 11 ranking is the highest in school history.LSU also climbed three spots in two other polls. The team jumped to No. 15 in the Soccer Buzz Top 30 and No. 17 in the Soccer Times Top 25, both released Tuesday.Congratulations to coach Brian Lee and all the LSU players.Lee has been able to do what many coaches before him have not. He’s been able to bring in great players to a school that should be easy to recruit for.You would think that as the Flagship school, with a multimillion-dollar Cox Communication Center for Student-Athletes and some of the nicest complexes in the nation LSU would have no problem recruiting talent. But that has not been the case. It’s a shame it took so long for a coach to realize he or she could get quality athletes here.I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, “The Tigers will win the SEC this season.” Florida — last year’s conference champ and the team predicted by many this preseason to repeat — lost too many players to capture the SEC title. That left the door wide open for the Tigers who are already on their way to capturing the goal — no pun intended. —-Contact Jay St. Pierre at [email protected]
