Honors College students will find themselves walking a little farther than next door to get their java fix this semester. PJ’s Coffee in the French House closed, and the owner opened another location off campus in the shopping center at Highland Road at Kenilworth Parkway. The French House location closed its doors early last spring because of a lack of sales. PJ’s asked the University this summer to close permanently, said David Heidke, LSU Dining director. The shop’s sales did not meet original projections, and the owners felt they could not continue with the location, Heidke said. The slow sales are attributed partly to the closing of West Laville Hall, which the Univesity did not inform Anthony Satterlee, owner of four PJ’s stores about prior to its closing, Satterlee said. The closing of West Laville combined with the opening of 459 Commons cut the shop’s business in half, Satterlee said. When the University and Satterlee created the business plan, LSU Dining was unaware of the West Laville project timeline. But before he closed the location, Satterlee “was aware of all of the factors that were going to happen in that part of campus,” Heidke said.Satterlee, who also owns the store in the Student Union, said the PJ’s shop in the Student Union has been operating 50 percent of its normal profit since construction started in the building two years ago. But he would not disclose how much money the Union shop makes. The French House location, which opened in Fall 2007, was a way to get away from construction, Satterlee said. Though the French House location no longer exists, Satterlee said he would like to have two locations on campus but would wait for Union construction to die down and for the residence halls to get situated before considering opening another PJ’s location. LSU Dining is scouting other businesses to fill the space in the French House, but no decisions will be made without student feedback, Heidke said. He said possible replacements include Subway, Starbucks Coffee, CCs and Quizno’s Subs, Heidke said. High traffic volume and the number of residence halls near the French House could prevent a business with another location from failing in the building, Heidke said. “With the right concept and one students are really interested in, it could work,” Heidke said. “We’re not ruling anything out.” Historically, businesses occupying PJ’s former spot remain open until midnight, and Heidke said he would like the new business to do the same. Before PJ’s was in the French House, a beignet shop, Cafe Vieux Carre, occupied the space for about a year and a half.Tia Embaugh, Honors College external relations director, said the French House was a convenient place to have a PJ’s and hopes something similar replaces it. Some students expressed dismay over the loss of the convenience the French House location provided.”[Coffee] will take a lot longer to get,” said Ryan Saucier, petroleum engineering sophomore. “But if you want, you can still get it.” Lance Heinen, petroleum engineering sophomore, said he rarely studied in the coffee house because it was always packed with students.—-Contact Allen Womble at [email protected]
