Facilities crews repaired a fractured water main on Dan Allen Drive last night, restoring water to Bragaw Residence Hall, according to Jack Colby, associate vice chancellor for facilities.
Pipes close to the domestic water line ruptured around 8:25 p.m. Sunday, and a student reported the leak to Campus Police.
Colby said across Facilities Operations, there are 26 people on call at all times, but each is stationed in a particular shop.
“For the utilities shops, one person was on call,” he said.
After assessing a situation, the person responding to an incident can contact an on-call administrator to take over for larger decisions.
“If they need assistance, they call additional folks for help,” he said.
Bragaw was without water for about three hours, he said, after they cut off the water to attach a pipe clamp to the broken main.
Water main breaks are typical, Colby said, due to changes in soil around pipes and corroding pipes.
Crews were able to identify where the fracture was and apply a pipe clamp that sealed off the break.
“They cut off water to the break at 9:30 p.m.,” he said, and Bragaw was without water for the duration of the piping repair.
The pipe spilled as much as 4,000 gallons of water, according to Colby.
