LSU coach Les Miles vaguely indicated Tuesday afternoon that coaching staff changes could be on the way soon.Miles met with the media to discuss the 31-30 loss to Arkansas and outline preparation for the bowl game. After a five-loss season, many fans have speculated that co-defensive coordinators Doug Mallory and Bradley Dale Peveto could be on the way out.Miles did his best to limit the rampant rumors of impending changes with an opening statement that touched on the speculation.”I’m not going to address other issues at this point,” Miles said. “I’m just going to operate from the premise that there are going to be some adjustments made, without question. First and foremost, attitude. First and foremost, doing the right things. I think we will in the short-term.”Miles clarified that “short-term” means before the bowl game. When asked about his general opinion of co-defensive coordinators, Miles wasn’t willing to weigh in on the debate.”I don’t know if I want to go over that piece right now, to be honest with you,” he said.Former Tennessee defensive coordinator John Chavis has been rumored as potential hire. Chavis was officially let go from Tennessee this week when new head coach Lane Kiffin arrived. As of Tuesday afternoon, LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva said no LSU football staffing changes, “to his knowledge,” had been made.”Staff changes are [Miles’] decision. Those coaches work for him,” Alleva said. “I discuss with him my thoughts, and he’ll discuss with me his thoughts. We’ll be doing that here in the near future. We’ll see where we’re going to go.”Alleva said his job is to help Miles and to serve as a support system.”All I can do is to give him my thoughts and reflections on what I see and listen to his thoughts and see where we can go from there … and make adjustments to get the ship going in the right direction in the future,” Alleva said.Miles said Tuesday he would support coaches who may be pursuing other jobs beneficial to their personal growth.”If there’s a guy that’s pursuing a job that allows him to advance himself — I mean Bo Pelini, are you kidding me? That’s a great opportunity for him,” he said. “Hopefully those goals won’t be exclusive such that they won’t benefit LSU.” Peveto, who served as Northwestern State’s defensive coordinator from 1996-1998, has been mentioned as a potential replacement for fired Demons’ coach Scott Stoker.Offensive line coach Greg Studrawa has garnered some attention as a possible hire for the Bowling Green head coaching vacancy after the school fired Gregg Brandon. Studrawa played for the Falcons and served as a Bowling Green assistant for six years. When asked if any coaches had asked permission to interview for outside jobs, Miles said he could not comment.LSU’s defensive coaching staff has been under tremendous heat after the Tigers’ let a 16-point third quarter lead slip away Friday in Little Rock, Ark.With little more than two minutes remaining, quarterback Casey Dick led the Razorbacks on a 69-yard drive capped off by a 24-yard game-winning touchdown pass.Miles said he reviewed numerous plays with his defensive coaching staff to find the errors.”There were great opportunities in that game to win. We can’t make mistakes that allow our opponents to beat us,” Miles said. “We did have a much more in-depth conversation that I’m just frankly not going to share.” BOWL PREPThe Tigers’ most likely bowl destination is the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta, but the Cotton, Outback and Liberty bowls still remain outside chances. The announcement will likely come Sunday soon after the BCS selections. The Tigers will have their first workout Dec. 14 after taking a two-week hiatus to study for finals and mend lingering injuries.Miles said he expects true freshman quarterback Jordan Jefferson to start in the bowl game.”The distance that Jordan Jefferson has come has been tremendous,” he said. “Where he was to prepare his team to win early on, was probably well away from that. I’m certainly pleased with his progress to this point.”Miles said he still has confidence in redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee, who injured his ankle in the Ole Miss game and did not play against Arkansas. Lee ended the regular season with 14 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, including seven interceptions for touchdowns.”I think he has certainly improved the length of time he has been our quarterback,” Miles said. “The injuries have certainly slowed him in the back end of this thing, missing the last game. I don’t know exactly how his health will be going into the bowl. Is it reasonable to assume he’ll play better next fall or in the bowl? Yes.”Sophomore quarterback Andrew Hatch, who has not played since injuring his lower leg against Georgia, is expected to be full strength for the bowl game.—-Contact Amy Brittain at [email protected]
