Political strategist and University alumnus James Carville spoke Friday morning in the Manship School of Mass Communication Holliday Forum to an audience of approximately 300 people about the importance of political activism and awareness.
Carville spoke as a part of Student Government’s projectGEAUX, which is themed “Democracy at Work” and aims to promote student political activism, public service and awareness.
“It’s a very big honor to come back. What they’ve done at this Manship School is remarkable,” Carville said.
Carville’s 15-minute speech combined humorous stories from his Louisiana background with serious political issues. He also stressed the need for Louisiana residents to stand up for their state.
“There’s never been a time where there is a greater need for young people to be involved,” Carville said.
Carville addressed the effects of Hurricane Katrina and criticized the federal government’s response to the disaster.
“I get so mad that I want to scream,” Carville said. “They’re ignorant.”
After his speech, Carville opened the floor to questions from audience members.
