It was a night of statistical anomalies during the LSU gymnastics team’s 196.150-195.800 victory Friday night against Arkansas in the PMAC.No. 9 LSU (11-2, 4-2) was above their season average on three of four events but below their total team season average. Meanwhile Arkansas (6-4, 3-3) never hit their season average on any event, but the Razorbacks swept the all-around.The Tigers’ top two performers, senior Ashleigh Clare-Kearney and junior Susan Jackson, each took a fall during an event and were well below their season all-around averages.”We did a great job at recovering when people made mistakes,” Clare-Kearney said. “A couple of weeks ago, we all just melted when something went wrong, but today we did a great job of holding it together, and that helped us stay in the meet. We could have easily crumbled.”Three out of the Razorbacks’ four all-around gymnasts were above their season average. The reason for most of the statistical anomalies: the floor, on which the team posted a 48.500, by far a season low.”A win is a win,” said LSU coach D-D Breaux. “We wanted to win the meet. We competed hard, and we worked hard coming into the meet, and that showed. We had isolated mistakes on events. We didn’t have a bad event, we just had isolated mistakes.”Two Tigers — Jackson and junior Sabrina Franceschelli — fell in the same corner during their tumbling passes in the event. But Clare-Kearney followed up her fall on the beam with a season-high 9.975 to win the floor title. In the other events, it was Tigers’ first four performers that pulled the team to victory.”I felt like one through four stepped up tonight,” Breaux said.LSU junior Kayla Rogers led the Tigers on the vault with a career-high 9.90 to tie for second. The Tigers posted a season-high 49.275 on the event, capped by Clare-Kearney’s season-high 9.95 to win the title. The Tigers then posted a 49.225 on the bars. Clare-Kearney, LSU sophomore Staci Schwitkis and Arkansas junior Casey Jo Magee tied for the event title with a 9.875.LSU led at the half-way point, 98.500-98.050.The Tigers came out strong on the beam, posting 9.75s and higher, before Clare-Kearney had her first fall on the beam since Jan. 16 against Georgia.Jackson finished with a 9.85 to tie for third to bring the Tigers’ beam score to 49.150.LSU junior Summer Hubbard posted a season-high 9.90 to tie for the beam title, her second of the season.Franceschelli said the team’s confidence is still high and the team is still hitting its stride.”There were little things here and there, but we just have to get back into the gym and work hard to fix the little things,” Franceschelli said.LSU returns to action next weekend to face North Carolina State in the second annual Etta James Memorial Meet.——Contact Andy Schwehm at [email protected]
