LSU was looking to clean up the little mistakes during its off week from Southeastern Conference competition. “Our focus is on our score and our potential in the meet,” LSU coach D-D Breaux said in a news release. “Every tenth and every performance is going to mean a lot as we build our regional qualifying score.” The No. 10 Tigers (10-2, 3-2) did just that, posting a season-high 197.400 team score to defeat North Carolina’s 194.775 and Illinois-Chicago’s 192.850 on Friday night in the PMAC. LSU won every apparatus in the tri-meet. The team also swept the all-around. Senior Ashleigh Clare-Kearney tied a season-high 39.625 to win the all-around title. Junior Susan Jackson came in second with a 39.500, and sophomore Staci Schwitkis came in third with a career-high 39.350. The Tigers started off the night on the vault with a 49.200 team score and placed the top-three individuals in the event. LSU freshman Gloria Johnson, SEC Freshman of the Week, posted a season-high 9.900 to win her first career individual title. Jackson, 9.875, came in second, and Clare-Kearney came in a tie for third with a season-low 9.85. The Tigers then posted a season-high 49.500 on the bars. Clare-Kearney posted a season-high 9.95 to win the event. Junior Sabrina Franceschelli posted a season-high 9.925 to come in second. Schwitkis and junior Summer Hubbard tied season highs with 9.875 each to tie for third. The Tigers then posted a 49.225 on the beam. Jackson and Clare-Kearney tied for the individual title in the event. Schwitkis posted a career-high 9.825 on the beam. LSU held over a two-point lead over UNC going into the final apparatus, the floor, and needed only a 49.075 to post its first 197.000 or above team score for the season. LSU easily did that, posting a season-high 49.475 to surpass their previous season-high 49.075. Four Tigers posted career- or season-high scores on the floor. Junior Kayla Rogers posted a career-high 9.925, Johnson posted a season-high 9.90, Hubbard had a career-high 9.875 and Schwitkis posted a career-high 9.85. Clare-Kearney posted a 9.925 to tie Rogers for the event title. Johnson came in third. The Tigers will remain at home next weekend to face Arkansas on Friday night.—-Contact Andy Schwehm at [email protected]
