The LSU softball team has won two of its first three games in the Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Lady Tigers defeated Alabama-Birmingham on Thursday, 10-5, to increase the team’s season-opening record to 12-1 since 1997.The team was led by freshman first baseman Anissa Young, who went 2-3 at the plate and broke open the game with a grand slam in the second inning.”There is always jitters in the first game,” said LSU coach Yvette Girouard. “We hit the ball well.”The Lady Tigers showed their lack of depth at the mound against No. 10 Oklahoma in the team’s first game Friday. The game was called in the 5th inning because of the eight run rule, as the team lost to the Sooners, 8-0.Junior Baylor transfer Kirsten Shortridge started in the circle for the Lady Tigers and gave up seven runs in 2 1/3 pitched.”As good as Shortridge was against UAB, she wasn’t very sharp against OU,” Girouard said.Girouard said the lack of depth at pitcher is going to be a problem for the team for a while.”This pitching staff right now is truly piecemeal,” Girouard said. “Shortridge did have surgery before she got here, so she’s been limited. Really the only healthy pitchers we have are a freshman in Brittany Mack and Casey Faile.”Sophomore Casey Faile took the mound against Hawaii in the team’s second game Friday and led the Tigers to a 6-5 victory against the Warriors.Faile managed to close the game out and throw the Lady Tigers’ first complete game after giving up a 3-run homerun in 7th inning.”It was hers to win or lose,” Girouard said. “She had thrown a great game up until that point.”The Lady Tigers play UAB on Saturday, and the winner will face the winner of the game between Oklahoma and Hawaii.
