LSU men’s golf coach Chuck Winstead said his team’s confidence is “pretty good” coming off a sixth place finish at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.The Tigers posted 3-under par 277 to tie for the lowest third round score in the tournament.”We’ve got two freshmen that combined for 5-under par, and that was very good,” he said. “Anytime you can go down there and beat Florida in a round of golf on their home golf course is pretty good because Florida is one of the best in the conference.”The Tigers will participate in the John Hayt Intercollegiate tournament in Ponte Verda, Fla., at Sawgrass Country Club, from Sunday through Monday.”It’s one of the most challenging courses that we will play all year,” Winstead said. “It’s a very good golf course. A lot of [how we do] is dependent upon the weather. It can get pretty windy down there. I’ve seen days where even par would be a teriffic golf score.”The course is a par-72 championship golf course that hosted The Players Championship for the PGA from 1977-1981.Senior Jarrod Barsamian is from the Ponte Verde area, and Winstead said Barsamian played at the course when he was younger, although he was not a member of the club.Winstead said Barsamian, who did not compete last weekend, will make the trip with the Tigers.”He’s definitely going to play,” Winstead said. “We’re going to take six and we’re going to play five and an individual. I haven’t decided which five will be in the lineup, but he will definitely be at the golf tournament.”The Tigers will look for freshman Sang Yi to lead the team after finishing in ninth place last weekend, posting a 1-under 209, his second career top-10 finish in five tournament appearances with the Tigers.”Sang had a tough nine holes to open the second round, but he’s only a freshman,” Winstead said. “He ended up finishing ninth in the tournament, which is not very often for a freshman to finish in the top 10 in a tournament.”Freshman Josh Jones also had a solid final round, posting a 2-under par 68 to finish tied for 55th place.——Contact Andy Schwehm at [email protected]
