Liam Finn + Eliza Jane – Champagne in Seashells

Nowadays, New Zealand is most associated with Lord of the Rings and Flight of the Conchords, but why stop there? Liam Finn is an experienced New Zealand artist starting to make his way stateside with his upcoming tour with Wilco.

His latest EP, Champagne in Seashells, is a pop mini-masterpiece. From start to finish, the album is a finely crafted mix of melody and noise slightly reminiscient of The New Pornographers. Upbeat guitars, organs and drums hold things steady while skittish guitar and synth lines bob in and out. Over the top rise the beautiful lyrics of Finn and Eliza Jane, harmonized to perfection.

“Long Way to Go” is finely-crafted pop songwriting at its finest, with its catchy vocal lines and danceable backbeat. “Honest Face” brings a more laid-back feel with its unrushed vocal lines and thick basslines. The EP ends with the silky voice of Eliza Jane over a slow groove on the track “On Your Side”.
