Zap Mama-ReCreation
The bold cover of Zap Mama’s new album ReCreationshows the likeness of a lady immediately reminiscent of Erykah Badu circa Mama’s Gun. But to try to peg Zap Mama’s Marie Daulne as a Badu rip-off is a hasty mistake.
ReCreationis an adventure from track to track. The album starts with the breathy, slow introductory track “ReCreation”, only to break out into the huge, grinding, funky beats of “Vibrations”. “Singing Sisters” then supplies a bright a capella groove, followed by the latin “Hello To Mama”. The album continues the winding path from style to style, amazing from “Do You Wanna” to the very last track, “Chill Out”.
This album is the freshest to come out in quite some time. The year is a little over halfway over, but it might not be too soon to suspect that Zap Mama’s ReCreation is the best of the year.
