TGIT is in full swing and this week’s episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” was great once again.
STARS: 5/5
Last week, we were left on the cliffhanger of April Kepner taking over Meredith Grey’s position as chief of general surgery. Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, was suspended from work, because she refused to follow Dr. Minnick’s orders.
Dr. Kepner originally sided with the other attendings. At first, she wanted nothing to do with Chief Bailey and Dr. Minnick’s plan to oust Dr. Webber as the residency director, replacing him with Minnick. But with Kepner having now taken over Dr. Grey’s job, her fellow attendings see her as a “traitor” and aren’t even talking to her.
This episode started off with husband and wife, Dr. Catherine Avery and Webber, arguing, as he realized she had been in cahoots with Bailey all along. In fact she even gave Bailey the idea to hire Minnick as the residency director replacement
Minnick started phase two of her project this week. Phase two called for the residents performing their own surgeries from start to finish. Their attendings were to only observe, they were ordered not to assist unless asked. The attendings, once again, were not pleased with this situation.
The two residents chosen for solo surgeries were Dr. Warren and Dr. Edwards.
Webber was the attending for Warren’s surgery, with Minnick and chief of pediatric surgery Dr. Robbins as Edwards’ attendings.
In another operating room Dr. Kepner, Pierce and Wilson were operating on a woman with cancer. This was chaotic in itself because not only was Dr. Pierce against Dr. Kepner but the patient was against her as well.
In fact, that patient referred to Dr. Kepner as “not Dr. Grey” and wanted to postpone the surgery until Grey came back, but couldn’t due to the severity of her illness. This patient experienced complications and had to be taken into surgery for a second time.
Before the beginning of this surgery, Pierce and Kepner got into an intense argument, resulting in Pierce’s removal from the O.R.
In Warren’s surgery, Bailey and Webber got into an argument, upsetting Warren, who said he was unable to enjoy his solo surgery. Webber was supposed to be the only attending on the case, but Bailey was hesitant and decided to observe.
Her involvement caused a riff between she and Webber.
Unfortunately, Edwards’ surgery ended in tragedy. She performed what was supposed to be a routine surgery on a 9-year-old boy. The surgery was going as planned until the child bled out on the table.
Both Edwards and Minnick were devastated. Minnick had never lost a child in the O.R. and she was unable to be the kind of advisor that Edwards needed.
As the episode was coming to an end, Dr. Jackson Avery and Kepner got into an argument. Kepner tried to explain that she was just doing what she had to do for the greater good of the hospital, but Jackson wasn’t hearing it. He believes that she was manipulated, whereas she thinks she has earned the job.
As always, the acting was wonderful. It felt so real, that I found myself yelling at my television. The plot was intense and I just could not look away.
Next week’s preview shows Bailey finally meeting with Grey after her suspension and I, like thousands of viewers, simply cannot wait.
