The LSU soccer team is now 5-0 in their best start in over a decade after a 3-1 win against Austin Peay (3-2) Sunday night.
The Tigers strung together three goals in a twelve minute span in the second half after falling behind for the first time this season due to an own goal scored near the end of the first half.
“It was our first real test of the season,” coach Brian Lee said. “We’ve come out so strong in the first four games and we’ve been up a couple of goals. Tonight when we had chances we did not have the same cutting edge early and we kind of let Austin Peay play their way into the game. The bottom line is that they are a mid-major that are going to win a ton of games.”
Senior forward Zoe Higgins scored the first goal for LSU to tie the game at 1-1 and fellow senior forward Nicole Howard gave the Tigers the lead just a few minutes later.
Junior forward Alex Thomas gave LSU some extra insurance in the 72nd minute with a third goal of the match.
The Tiger’s gave up their first goal of the season in the 28th minutes off an Austin Peay corner kick. A physical attack on defense disrupted Austin Peay’s offense and kept possession for the Tigers.
“Halftime was a major character test,” Lee said. “There was nothing tactical about it. The ability of our team to go out and show that grit, resolve and toughness to push their way through the second half is a positive sign.”
Junior goalkeeper Caroline Brockmeier had three saves to keep LSU in the game until the offense came together in the second half.
The Tigers will take their 5-0 start against No. 24 Central Florida in Orlando this Friday at 6:00 p.m. before coming back home against Liberty next Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
