Why I can’t call myself a ‘State fan’
Yes, I’m a junior here at State. Yes, I have gone here for my whole college career. Yes, I pull for State. But I cannot be a ‘State fan’ because of the loser mentality that so many of you share.
At the Virginia Tech game, our football team was railing the Hokies at the beginning of the game. All the sudden, I hear everyone in the Wolfpack Club section start talking about how UNC is down 14 against ECU. All the sudden, all the ‘State fans’ were not focused on their own team, but were more focused on a game that doesn’t have anything to do with State at all. The fans got out of the game because they were focusing on insignificant things, the team got out of the game because the fans were out of it, and we lost a game that we should have won. That is a loser mentality. To be focused on wanting UNC to lose, and not caring about what your team is doing is pretty pathetic. UNC went on to win that game 42-17, while we lost 41-30 against VT.
Even as I was leaving the game, I heard chants of “ECU ECU ECU,” which was just ignorance on those peoples part, but it still showed this loser mentality that ‘State fans’ possess. Our team just lost, but they were getting excited because they thought that UNC had lost as well. As if UNC losing would make it all better. We should have still been undefeated after that game, but that doesn’t matter, because (we think) UNC got beat by ECU.
As I’m writing this, I am watching the ECU-N.C. State game. We’re at the end of the first quarter, state is down 21 to ECU. This is what really fueled my frustration with ‘state fans’ and pushed me to write this. Any ‘State fans’ chanting “ECU ECU ECU” now?
So, how does N.C. State curb this problem? How do we change ‘State fans’ into true fans? First off, we need to realize that UNC doesn’t think about us unless they are about to play us. They focus on their own team, like we should be doing. We need to start focusing on our team and only our team. We have a real chance to have a really good football season this year, but it’s not going to be as good as it could be because ‘State fans’ care more about other things. This is our best chance to change. We should get behind our football team 100 percent and stop talking about UNC.
