BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted LSU signee Zach Lee with the 28th pick in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft.
Lee fielded phone calls that night from the organization, asking if he wanted to fly out to California and to see the team play.
That wasn’t in Lee’s plans. He turned them down for something much less lucrative: summer school.
Lee has spent the summer taking classes at LSU and working with the Tigers’ young receivers.
“He’s a workman,” said LSU coach Les Miles. “He’s a quarterback that has a personality that wants to get it accomplished and is not letting time pass where he’s not just working hard at understanding the offense and those things.”
Until the Aug. 16 deadline, not even Miles or LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri know what Lee will do.
“I can’t tell you that there’s no chance the Dodgers aren’t going to unload a truck of money at [Lee’s] doorstep on August 16th,” Mainieri said last week.
Miles echoed the same thoughts at Southeastern Conference Media Days.
“I anticipate him being with us, but it wouldn’t be without the realm of possibility that the Dodgers went after him hard,” Miles said.
LSU can offer him a chance to win both national championships in both football and baseball, Miles said.
“I think the odds are with us,” Miles said. “I think he wants to be a college student and wants the opportunity to chase a championship in both baseball and football.”
