“Higher we go, beg and plead for the culture” is how Migos chose to begin its new album, “Culture II.” The album is comprised of 24 songs, making it nearly two hours long. The album is well-worked and each song is distinctive, which is something special for a 24-song album.
Consider this: you’re driving, you’re working out, you’re cooking for your estranged family –– what music can get you through all of these without your brain exploding? Meaningless and free-spirited rap like you find in“Culture II.” This isn’t to say the rap in “Culture II” isn’t well thought out, but it isn’t heavy. The lyrics are nowhere close to those of Eminem or XXXTENTACION.
This upbeat form of rap hasn’t been heard in years. Rappers like DRAM, Aminé and Migos are seen as the renaissance of hopeful, happy rap that was birthed by Tupac and Run-DMC.
“Auto Pilot,” the fifth song on the album, is a perfect example of the light, upbeat feel of Migos. Even though the song has lyrics like, “Put it in her goddamn mouth,” it is still catchy and has a positive beat. This element of blending explicit lyrics with a happy beat is innovative and fun to listen to.
The diversity of voices in Migos creates endless opportunities for new music. The group is made up of three rappers known by the stage names Quavo, Offset and Takeoff. You may know Offset from his fiancé, Cardi B. The pair have taken over the new age rap music industry and their seems to be no end in sight. Though Cardi B only makes one appearance in Culture II, many other artists made sure the album still the Migos flare.
One quarter of the album has a feature, which almost seems necessary with the amount of songs included. Artists such as Ty Dolla $ign, Travis Scott, Gucci Mane, Post Malone, Drake, Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz and Cardi B are featured in songs.
The words “brazy” and “skrrt” seem to be a reoccurring theme for Migos. And it is clearly working. The three rappers have granted their audiences wishes with a second album following “Culture I” which came out almost a year ago in 2017. The album is almost double the length of its predecessor, leaving it with more room to become a classic amongst Migos fans.
If you are feeling sad and need a quick pick-me-up, this album may be for you. It is far from perfect, but thankfully music doesn’t have to be perfect –– all it has to do is make you feel something and Migos will definitely do just that.
