LSU pulled out a hard-fought win over Arkansas in Fayetteville Saturday night, holding off a late rally from the Razorbacks.
The Tigers won 24-17 behind quarterback Joe Burrow’s 15-of-21 passing for 195 yards and one touchdown.
The Razorbacks received to begin the game but were hindered by two false start penalties. Sophomore cornerback Kary Vincent then sacked Arkansas quarterback Ty Storey on third and seven to force a punt.
Quarterback Joe Burrow hit freshman receiver Ja’Marr Chase for 13 yards to start the game before LSU’s drive stalled and the Tigers were forced to punt.
The LSU defense continued to hold the Razorbacks, only allowing one more first down in the first quarter.
On the first play of LSU’s second drive, Burrow hit sophomore receiver Justin Jefferson for a 40-yard touchdown pass to put the Tigers up 7-0 with 7:30 left in the first quarter.
On LSU’s first drive of the second quarter, the Tigers ran sophomore running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire six times in a row for 23 total yards and two first downs.
Then senior running back Nick Brossette ran the ball three times in a row for 15 yards and two more first downs, setting up for an LSU play action pass where Burrow completed to Jefferson against for 16 yards.
With some help from an LSU offensive line that has struggled recently, Brossette powered through for a 12-yard touchdown run to put LSU up 14-0 with 5:24 left in the half.
Both teams traded punts before junior linebacker Michael Divinity forced a sack fumble on Storey, which sophomore safety Grant Delpit recovered. LSU’s turn of luck did not last long as Burrow has a sack fumble of his own to give Arkansas the ball back at the LSU 33-yard line.
Storey then hit receiver Jared Cornelius for a 27-yard completion into the red zone. With six seconds left in the half, Delpit came up with a big pass breakup in the end zone and limited the Razorbacks to a field goal as they trailed 14-3 going into halftime.
Both teams punted to start the half before LSU found its groove again.
Burrow and Jefferson connected once again, this time for consecutive completions of 8 and 35 yards. Edwards-Helaire capped off the drive with a 13-yard touchdown run to put LSU up 21-3.
The Razorbacks seemed to be marching downfield on the next drive before sophomore defensive end Glen Logan sacked Storey for a nine-yard loss to force a punt.
Burrow completed a 26-yard pass to junior receiver Dee Anderson down to the Arkansas 26-yard line to begin the next drive, but a false start penalty stalled the drive. Kicker Cole Tracy drilled a 40-yarder to extend LSU’s lead to 24-3 to end the third quarter.
An eight-play, 76-yard touchdown drive from Arkansas kept the game in play.
Storey hit receiver La’Michael Pettway for 31 yards before hitting Grayson Gunter for 23 yards. Storey connected with tight end Cheyenne O’Grady for an 11-yard touchdown to cut LSU’s lead to 24-10.
Arkansas continued to chip away at LSU’s lead. Storey completed a pass to Jared Cornelius for 19 yards. A pass breakup by Vincent was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after the play, moving the Razorbacks 15 yards up field.
Then Storey hit O’Grady for a 32-yard touchdown to cut LSU’s lead down to 24-17.
Trying to preserve the win, Burrow completed a 14-yard pass to receiver Derrick Dillon for the first down. Burrow kept the ball on the keeper for 16 yards on the following play. With a chance to score, Brossette ran for 16 yards and slid right before the goal line to prevent Arkansas from getting the ball back, and sealed the win.
