Student Government President J Hudson asked the executive-staff members how much progress they are making within their committees to complete initiatives, while Speaker Brooksie Bonvillain referred 10 pieces of legislation to committees at the executive and legislative meetings Wednesday night.
Spring SG election dates were also revealed at the Senate meeting. Filing for the election will occur Feb. 21-23, general elections will be March 22, and runoff elections will be March 29.
“We will not let the campaigns interfere with our jobs and our capacities,” Hudson said to the Senate. “We’re not going to appear as a divided Student Government, we are going to appear as one Student Government.”
During the executive meeting, Hudson checked for progress updates on initiatives with little or no progress, including assessing fee bills, building covered bus stops, extending library hours, extending wireless on campus, the Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic baseball bus trip, creating a printable sports calendar, increasing priority points per game, advocating for the University’s renewable energy, and inquiring about solutions for traffic on Burbank and Nicholson drives.
Hudson also asked about plans for reforming international student orientation, one of his campaign
initiatives, which currently has not been touched aside from brainstorming by Lauren Leist, the assistant director of organization outreach.
“We have 80 days left, so we’ve got to be hitting those,” Hudson said at the executive meeting about
his campaign initiatives.
The majority of the executive meeting time was dedicated to University Recreation Director Laurie Braden, who presented results of the 2010 Facility Tour, where SG members and UREC employees visited other college recreational centers in Texas.
At the Senate meeting, Bonvillian referred five bills to the finance committee and five resolutions to the rules committee. The legislation will be debated at next Wednesday’s meeting.
The chairs of each Senate committee also addressed the Senate about the events their committees are planning for the spring.
The Senate approved a new Senate secretary, Lonnie Granier, and a new Senate parliamentarian, Justin Terracciano.
University Court Chief Justice Danielle Rushing asked the Senate to accept the resignations of two University Court justices, Autumn Autrey and Francis Boustany. The Senate accepted the resignations.
Bonvillain requested to appoint Mary Grace Brignac and Rachel Theriot, who work in the legislative office, as legislative aides.
After the Senate meeting there was an orientation session for the newly initiated senators.
