After blowing out Illinois State, 10-2, on Friday night, the No. 5 LSU softball team earned a similar result against the Redbirds on Saturday with a 9-1 win, continuing the Tigers winning-streak to seven-straight games.
Just like in their previous matchup, the Tigers (11-2) found themselves in a deficit again this time trailing the Redbirds (3-10), 1-0, in the first inning.
After two singles by Illinois State, sophomore third baseman Riley Strandgard hit a routine ground-ball by junior third baseman Sahvanna Jaquish, who committed an error, allowing a run score for the Redbirds.
The Tigers weren’t down for long. In the bottom of the first, LSU regained the lead 2-1, aided by a few mistakes from the Redbirds.
After junior third baseman Constance Quinn led off the inning with an infield single, sophomore Emily Griggs and Jaquish both grounded out. LSU loaded the bases with walks from senior catcher Kellsi Kloss and senior shortstop Bianka Bell.
LSU tied the game after junior outfielder Bailey Landry reached on an error. Freshman second baseman Shemiah Sanchez was then hit by a pitch to plate another run, putting the Tigers ahead, 2-1.
Jaquish made up for her error in the first inning when she hit a three-run home run to stretch the Tigers lead to 6-1 in the fourth, but she wasn’t finished redeeming herself.
The Tigers headed into the fifth needing three runs to win by mercy-rule. Quinn, who went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, hit a one-out single to put the Tigers in position to end the game early.
After a Griggs single, Jaquish ended the game with a two-RBI single to bring home Quinn and Griggs.
LSU also got a strong pitching outing from junior pitcher Baylee Corbello. Corbello pitched a complete game, only allowing four hits, one run, and notching five strikeouts.
The Tigers will play their next game against Texas Tech on Saturday at 4:55 p.m.
