Students took to the stage Tuesday night to compete in the first annual Homecoming Talent Show held in the Union Theater. Much to everyone’s surprise, the judges chose four winners instead of three — rapper Darker Parker, music groups Table for 2 and Kirkland, and singer “Hannah” — will open at this year’s Homecoming Concert on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. on the Parade Ground.
LSU’s Got Talent was a collaborated effort between the Homecoming Committee and Student Activities Board, said event organizer and theater senior Cydney Mitchell.She said they took last year’s Open Mic Night event and elevated it.
“I can’t believe so many people came out to support a new event,” Mitchell said.
Kicking off with a bang, the crowd turned up to WNC Whop’s “You Know How I Play It” before the contestants came out while a few Homecoming T-Shirts were distributed.
Throughout the show, there were a series of contests between audience members for different prizes, sponsored by Raising Cane’s.
LSU faculty and staff members who double as accomplished dancers, fashion designers, actors and musicians comprised the panel of judges.
A variety of singers, rappers, dancers, music groups and spoken word artists made up the night’s performance roster. An active audience jammed to the music played by the disc jockey while screaming for each contestant.
Instagram star @nicknpattiwhack_ took to the stage during a short intermission to give the crowd a few laughs.
The audience members were happy with the mix of different acts.
“I thought the show was great, such a diverse mix of performers,” coastal environment science senior Paris Frazier said.
Performer Brandon Pari$ said he was “very happy” with the turnout.
“There were certain moments when the audience really enjoyed [it],” Pari$ said.
Many audience members are pumped for the Homecoming Concert. Sports administration senior Darren Davis said he is one of those excited.
“I can’t wait to see my friend Darker Parker. I love his music,” Davis said.
The concert will begin at 8:30 p.m. and end at 10:30 p.m. A rave will follow.
