Three tailgaters were arrested on campus Saturday for their responses to the student-led protest against the purple and gold Confederate flag.
The Student Equality Commission held a protest that began at the African American Cultural Center, looped around campus and ended at Tiger Stadium.
LSUPD Chief Ricky Adams said these were the first arrests connected to the student protests. Saturday was the third weekend the Student Equality Commission led a protest against the flag.
The first tailgater arrested was Kathryn Frazier, of 316 Parkplace Drive, Alexandria and a student at LSU-Alexandria. Frazier was booked for disturbing the peace by interfering with a lawful assembly.
Frazier was on Dalrymple Drive across the street from the Pentagon dormitories at about 3:50 p.m., tailgating under a tent.
Adams said Frazier was seen throwing ice at a protester but did not hit anyone.
A protester stopped after passing Frazier’s tent and told an officer that Frazier had been throwing ice.
The police approached Frazier and arrested her.
Sean Kilroy, of 127 Whitestork Drive, Slidell, was arrested and charged with simple battery and disturbing the peace.
Adams said Kilroy threw an object at the crowd of protesters and hit a protester in the back.
Jonathan Malen, music education senior, was arrested and charged with remaining after forbidden.
Malen was standing at the corner of Nicholson Drive and South Stadium Road at 4:20 p.m.
Adams said Malen was challenging the protesters about a sign that had a purple and gold swastika on it.
Malen was yelling and pointing at the crowd and an officer told him to leave.
When Malen did not leave, the officer pushed Malen into a garbage can that was behind him.
Malen stood up and pushed the officer. Several other officers moved closer to Malen to separate him from the protesters and then arrested him.
Adams said there were a number of counter protests on campus Saturday.
“We kept all the different groups protesting at the same time separate and respecting their freedom of speech,” Adams said.
