Senior golfer Andrew Lanahan placed second Saturday in the 33rd-annual Rice Planters Amateur Championship at Snee Farm Country Club in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Lanahan shot a 9-under-par 207 and finished one stroke behind tournament champion Tristan Lambert of Sydney, Australia.
The tournament was scheduled for four rounds, but the final day was cancelled because of heavy thunderstorms.
The championship was determined by the players’ 54-hole score instead of 72.
“We actually played nine holes [in the final round], and I was doing really well,” Lanahan said in a news release. “I made some birdies to start my round and the guy ahead of me wasn’t playing as well. I definitely had a shot to win. It’s unfortunate that we weren’t able to finish, but that’s life.”
Lanahan stroked an even-par 72 in the first round and shot 3-under and 6-under in the second and third rounds respectively.
“I just tried to remain patient after the first round,” Lanahan said. “That was a really boring round because I struggled a little bit with my putter. I knew it was just a matter of time before the putts started falling.”
Lanahan said his short game improved in the second and third rounds, and allowed him to finish strong.
Junior teammate Chris Wells also competed in the tournament and tied for 11th place with a 54-hole score of 5-under-par 211.
After sitting out the 2004-05 season with a torn rotator cuff, Lanahan has returned to the links with success this summer.
He and Wells won the team championship July 3 at the 38th-annual Spirit of America Golf Classic, and Lanahan also placed third individually.
“It’s a big confidence builder to do well in back-to-back weeks,” Lanahan said. “The work I have put in to rehabbing my shoulder has really paid off. It was the right decision for me to redshirt and not rush myself back into action. This shows that determination can go a long way.”
Wells and teammates Aaron Smith, Brian Noonan and Beck Troutman are currently competing in the 99th Southern Amateur Championship at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Lanahan was scheduled to participate in the event but had to withdraw because of a death in the family.
The tournament began July 13 and concludes July 16.
