The LSU swimming and diving teams grabbed their first victories of the season this past weekend against Delta State. The men’s team (1-4) beat the Statesmen 92-21, while the women (2-3) won 100-12. The women’s team also beat Southwest Missouri State 66-47 at the three-school meet held at the DSU Aquatics Center in Cleveland, Miss.
The men’s team fell to Southwest Missouri State 58-55.
Lindsay Staak, Lauren Harvey, Heather Brand and Colleen Bertirotti started off the day winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:47.18. Bertirotti, a true freshman, also took home a win in the 50-yard freestyle after finishing in 24.23.
Margaret Beadle swam past Southwest Missouri’s Marcy O’Neal to win the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.20.
Heather Brand and Lindsay Staak also took individual wins for the Tigers. Brand won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.22, while Staak swam the 100-yard backstroke in 57.61 to take first place in the event.
The women finished with a total of eight wins on Saturday.
Then men’s team won six events. The four time German Junior Champion, Jan Minartz, had two individual wins in the 100-yard freestyle (9:35.18) and 500-yard freestyle (4:37.65) events.
Senior Neil Lowe, a Scotland native, swam the 100-yard butterfly in 50.65 to win the event while Justin Boyes beat out Southwest Missouri’s Ramiro Palmer in 1:54.43 to take the victory in the 200-yard individual medley.
The Tigers swept the diving events.
Junior Jessica Wantz took the 1-meter and 3-meter events for the Tigers, scoring 271.75 and 289.30, respectively.
Freshman Adam Hebert had his first individual win as a Tiger when he took first place in both the 1 and 3-meter events.
On Friday, the Tigers lost to conference rival Alabama at Tuscaloosa. The women stayed close in the meet finishing 137-104 behind the Tide while the men fell 138-39.
All-American Stephanie Smith swam the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:10.54 to win the event.
The men’s relay team of Jared Strecker, Robbie Moon, Neil Lowe and Ross Hebert took the win in the 400-yard medley.
LSU coach Jeff Cavana said swimming two meets in two days was a good test for his team.
“This will hopefully benefit us later in the year when we have to go to the Nike Cup and be able to compete in both the late-evening and the next morning,” Cavana said.
