Students in architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, and graphic design are getting a chance to showcase their artistic tastes in the Union Art Gallery during the month of February.
Interior design chairwoman T.L. Ritchie said the show is a good way to educate the community about what goes on in the department.
“The School of Art has had several shows, but the college felt that there has never been a show for the design field,” Ritchie said. “The show is a good way to showcase students’ work and it also gives the University the opportunity to see what goes on here.”
Leon Steele, an assistant professor in interior design, said the program is also good for students who are still trying to decide what field to study.
Steele was on the selection committee for the program. He said that exhibits for the show went through several stages prior to being chosen.
“The show was about a year in the making,” Steele said. “We first had to come up with guidelines and applications for entry. The exhibits then went through several review processes. The first being with faculty members. The exhibits then went onto the art gallery for selection by a jury made up of several art and design faculty members.”
The collection is made up of drawings, models and furniture from the various areas of the design program. It also includes animations and movies from the graphic design department depicting space and time.
“This serves as one of the technological examples of design and what the students learn,” Steele said.
Ritchie said that the show, which opened Feb. 2 has been very well-received. She said scores of students, faculty members, families and visitors were on hand to view the exhibit.
Steele said one thing that the college will do is extend an invitation to the show professionals in town.
“This will give them an idea of what is going on in the academic design field,” Steele said.
The LSU Student Design Show is open with free admission to visitors all month long Monday through Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
