The fall Student Government elections finally are over, with the results of Thursday’s runoff announced Friday night in Coates Hall.
SG Commissioner of Elections Devin Reid announced runoff winners in the College of Arts and Sciences, Basic Sciences, University College Center for Advising and Counseling and University College Center for Freshman Year.
Ashley Martin beat Randa Von Kanel for the last Senate seat in Arts and Sciences, and Eric Greber beat Ashton Hilton for the final seat in Basic Sciences.
Rachel Buller, Meghan O’Hara, Benjamin McElroy and Adam Johnson again came out on top in the race for four seats in UCAC. Five candidates ran for four seats in the college, but all received a percentage of votes required to go to the runoff, so the race simply was rerun.
Unhappy with the situation, current senator and candidate Adam Johnson filed an injunction with University Court, saying the runoff does not make sense because the top four candidates were the clear winners and there was no need for a runoff.
University Court Chief Justice Tony Corbett said they heard Johnson’s arguments last Thursday night, but decided against the injunction.
Corbett said he believed the Election Code was pretty straight forward, and the code said all five candidates needed to go to the runoff.
Corbett also said if the senators have a problem with the code they should handle it through new legislation in the Senate.
In the UCFY runoff race, David Moore, Elizabeth Weiner, Andrew Heacock, Carey Ash and Ryan Hidalgo won Senate seats.
The Office of Computing Services reported that 1,229 students voted in the runoff.
