Derek Curiel was named SEC Freshman of the Week following LSU’s midweek win over Xavier (Ohio) and weekend sweep of Missouri.
Curiel is a freshman outfielder for the Tigers from West Covina, Calif. who hit .571 (8-for-14) with two doubles, one triple, four RBI and six runs in four games last week.
In his first career SEC series he batted .455 (5-for-11) with one triple, three RBI, four runs and a .571 on-base percentage. His three-run triple in the fourth inning on Friday broke a 2-2 tie and gave LSU a lead it would hold onto through the final out.
Curiel is arguably one of the best lead off hitters in the country with a .451 batting average and a .598 on base percentage all while recording seven doubles, two triples, one home run and 19 RBI on 32 hits. He also has struck out 11 times in his 71 collegiate at-bats.
Curiel has reached base in every game this season, giving him a 21 game on-base streak to start his collegiate career.
Curiel was a sure fire top-10 selection in the 2024 MLB Draft but decided to forego the draft to play for Jay Johnson and the Tigers.
The Tigers look to Curiel to lead off the team strong this week as they host University of New Orleans on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to Austin to face the No. 5 Texas Longhorns for a three game series.
