Louisiana is known for its gaudy culture and food, and LSU is no exception. On and around campus, there are several popular spots, such as Chick-fil-A in the Student Union or Chipotle right off campus—but there are also several hidden gems that are just as delicious.
The newest addition to the LSU Student Union, Tiger Traditions, has been a hit with students since its debut. In just roughly eight months since opening, its popularity rivals that of any other dining spot in the Union.
To attest to that popularity, students have already petitioned to have it added to the list of places eligible for a student meal exchange—and they won.
Rising sophomore mass communication major Mia Hattaway says Tiger Traditions is her favorite place to eat on campus because of the variety on the menu.
“I love grabbing a bite to eat at Tiger Traditions because it has a good amount of choices depending on what mood you’re in, as well as really tasty mocktails!” Hattaway says.
Her go-to order is the hot honey wings with ranch and a mango mojito mocktail.
Another on-campus favorite among students is City Pork, located in the basement of Foster Hall. Several students say their pork quesadilla is worth the trip behind the library. Rising junior mass communication major Ainsley Flood says their lattes are also a major draw and part of the reason she eats there when she’s on campus.
Nearby off-campus favorites are beloved for a reason. One of the most popular places is The Chimes, located just outside the Northgate of campus. Their wide menu offers something for everyone, and it’s always a hit.
Rising junior and Residential Assistant Alex Sheesley says the location of The Chimes is one of the major bonuses for him since he’s always on campus.
“I’m a shrimp po’boy enthusiast, and the best spot to get one without going far from campus is on the corner of Highland and Chimes,” Sheesley says.
The Chimes is a timeless hotspot for students and locals alike, but Empire Wings is another hidden gem that’s bringing the LSU community together in true Louisiana fashion.
Recent LSU grad Charles James says he has a close connection to Empire Wings because of his relationship with the owner and manager, and he helped put the spot on the map.
“I had a close relationship with the owner, Vic, and the manager, Ardis,” James says. “They helped turn their location into a buzzing chat spot through fundraisers planned with my chapter.”
He says Empire Wings is so good that the only time he eats mayonnaise is in the combo sauce they use.
Louisiana’s culture is rich around campus, and clearly the food is no exception. These campus veterans have offered suggestions not only for places to try, but for the go-to items at each one.
Happy snacking, Tigers!
